I thought I'd kick things off with one of the most widely-used yet little known rifles of the First World War, Ritter Friedrich von Mannlicher's Repetiergewehr M95 Shown are my Repetiergewehr (bottom) and Repetierstutzenkarabiner, along with an M95 NCO bayonet. Chambered for the 8x50mm M93 patrone and using a unique straight-pull action, the M95 was the primary rifle of Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria. Several million were produced, both at the Steyr factory in Wiener-Neustadt and the FGGY factory in Budapest. -Larry

We need to organize a shooting event at Burro Canyon! I have an M95 Steyr rifle and a few carbines that I've never fired. Maybe after the April event we'll get a GWHS shooting event on the calendar!
Thanks for posting.

Larry,
Where did you get the sling for your carbine?

Larry, Where did you get the sling for your carbine? Chris Hi Chris, I got the sling from Rick Reich at Reich Outfitters: www.gunboards.com/sites/reichoutfitters/index.htmlIt's a Bulgarian sling, but it's virtually identical to AH issue. Also, a GWHS shooting event would be great! I've got a pretty good stash of 8x56R, and I haven't fired the rifle yet (the carbine kick like mules!). -Larry

For those interested Big 5 has M95 Steyr Carbines on sale for $79.95!! Don't know how long the sale lasts, but they're a neat WWI era firearm for cheap. I bought a couple the last time they were on sale - got two made in Budapest, which are a little harder to find.

Thor,
It's hit and miss - check out any Big 5 and they should have at least one M95. If they don't try another. Last time these were on sale for $99 and I went to every Big 5 in my area checking out who had what. Most of them are in decent shape. I was looking for receivers marked Budapest and found two. I can check out my local stores if you can't find any near you.

Larry,
We're still on - the time has been changed - we'll be starting at 11:00 and going until late afternoon - at Lytle Creek. See the link on the previous post for directions. When you get to the range tell them you are looking for the long range for rifles. Alvaro will be there early. I will be joining probably after lunch as I'm working in the morning.
Anyone else going? I don't believe anyone's going in uniform, but you can if you want. Bring any firearm you want to shoot - doesn't have to be WWI.

I could be mistaken, but I thought I saw somewhere that Brit 303 long blanks can be used in the Steyrs. Is that true?

New Mexico Military Surplus Rifles Pistols Shooters - NM-MILSURPS will once again host the "Guns of August", which is based upon the theme of rifles of the First World War, this coming summer at the Albuquerque Shooting Range Park. I am not sure of which month this happen at this time but I am going to try to do this either in June, July or August. Our shoots are always on the 4th Sunday of every month but if we get enough people for this match then we could possibly make it a two day event for both days of that weekend if the city manager will let us as that range is usual booked for other clubs. The ranges for this shoot will be 200 meters and 500 meters with a full man steel target at 500 meters and shoulder/head steel target at 400 meters. Recently the City of Albuquerque also has metal targets now placed from 300 to 1,000 yards (not meters) at the range we shoot on for our matches so the possibilty of using these could also be employed. Right now I am the only person who dresses in period attire for this shoot but I am CRAZY anyways. It would be COOL to have other reenactors dress the part for this shoot, it gives you an idea of what all that equipment on you is like shooting in, I bet Seph has done it ;D he is as CRAZY as I am, guess that is why we get along so well Patrick
