looking to acquire a leather jerkin as a halfway house cold weather item to supplement a future greatcoat purchase. Now as I see it the WW1 item was identical to the ww2 one but for the buttons. To this end, would a 50's Belgian one be a suitable wearer once ww1 style buttons were added to replace the gold ones? I hasten to add that if that wouldn't be spot on then I will seek another, more accurate alternative.
I have never seen a ww1 jerkin so my supposition that they are identical may be a little naive.
many thanks Tim

Hello Tim,
In answer to your queary about the Belgian issue item.. NO, it is not suitable, so please do not consider it. I have forwarded you a 'PM' with suitable items for your consideration / purchase!

Belgium Jerkins WW2 are lighter/different colour to the WW1 British Jerkin.
But a WW2 belgium jerkin is a good find! As they were only suppiled for a short time.

Belgium Jerkins WW2 are lighter/different colour to the WW1 British Jerkin. The business about the jerkin being too light is no problem as the leather will darken considerably the first time yoiu apply dubbin or oil (even petroleum jelly will do at a pinch) - the jerkin will be dark enough to satify critics AND more water resistant Your big problem will be the lining as military ones seem to be lined in Army blanket or uniform cloth (depending on the item found) Tom

At the end of the day, once you buy the jerkin and the dye, your only gonna be saving yourself a few bucks, MAYBE. It's much simpler and less time consuming to do it the right way, right away.

Gentlemen.. it's not just a question of the colour. Study the layout of the stitching pattern around the button holes. Also, examples that I have been able to examine, are a slightly different cut than the WW1 / WW2 British originals!
Another point; Belgian examples, depending upon the manufacturer seem to be waisted!!!

In regards to jerkin color - presumably there would be a "range" of colors - different leather sources, different manufacturers - etc.? For the LF I've been looking at some of the repros available - waiting on a 3rd vendors offering - but of the two I've received one has what I'll call a medium brown - the other a dark brown and I'm wondering if one or both would have fallen into the range of colors that could or would have been issued. For now, what vendor(s) are authorized for the jerkin, if any?

John,
The two pics that you have posted of the available range of material shades.. do fit into the actual period item issue.
I would have no problem in recommending either shade, or anything in between, or slightly either side. The main issue with the British Leather Jerkin = Style + Quality + Period Authenticity + Material used.

Actually, WPG is out of stock of them. I have a feeling he's doing a new run.
