Mojave War Memorial Cross

As many of you have already heard, the Mojave War Memorial Cross erected by the American Legion in 1934 to honor WWI dead was stolen this past Sunday. It has been suggested that we as a group do something to help replace the memorial. I found the following site regarding making a donation:

I would suggest that individuals who wish to donate do so, but I would also like to throw out to the board and the membership that we as a club make a larger donation. The GWHS strives to honor the memory of WWI in many ways, and I think making a statement regarding this desecrated WWI memorial would be very appropriate. I will discuss this further with the board but would like to hear from all.

I would also like to contact the Mojave American Legion if/when the cross is to be replaced as it might be appropriate, if the American Legion concurs, for the GWHS to have a presence in the re-dedication of the memorial.

I completely agree that something should be done. The Board will be taking this up.

Desecrating war memorials is wrong (and I'm putting it far more politely than what I feel). I hope the perpetrators are caught and dealt with appropriately.

The board has approved a GWHS donation to the Liberty Institute in the amount of $500 to help restore the WWI memorial that was stolen in the Mojave desert.

I would like to solicit additional donations from GWHS members, as well as my friends and family, and encourage all of you to do the same. Donations can be made by a check made out to the GWHS and mailed directly to me, or via Paypal at [e-mail]. Please include "Mojave WWI Memorial Donation" in the memo line or description. Donations can also be made directly to the Liberty Institute at the address in the post above.

Thanks to all who support this worthwhile cause and please spread the word to anyone who might be interested in helping. The reward for information leading to an arrest or coviction in this case has risen to $125,000, so this is getting attention.

I am also going to contact the Liberty Inst. regarding the GWHS participating in any rededication ceremony and will keep you all posted.
