I just received my k.u.k.-style ankle boots from Mattimore Harness (aka civilwarboots.com), so I'm looking for tips and recommendations, i.e. should I treat them with Snowseal, and/or polish them up with black shoe polish? Leave them be?
Please share your thoughts.
Thanks,
Larry

I wouldn't put on the snow seal- that won't allow the leather to breathe and in the long run, it's not good for leather. At most, I'd be inclined to use some Picard's Shoe Oil- I've used it for years with no ill effects.

Larry, I'm with Adam - there's no need to seal them. I'd use the oil of your choice - Picards, neatsfoot, Olive oil, dubbin. I thougth that AH boots were blackened early in the war, but later brown boots were more common? Before you dye or polish them black I'd check to make sure. You can always blacken them later!

Neetsfoot oil will darken them significantly! WALT

Sorry for necroposting, but I bought some lederfett from this guy. The stuff works great, at room temperature it has the same texture as grease and it's very easy to work into the leather. The lederfett also contains black pigment, so it will gradually darken your leather items. Another big plus is the fact that when used on rough-out leather it doesn't flake off like shoe polish does. (Not sure if it's just a personal thing, but my boots used to leave a trail of black flakes of shoe polish even after I brushed the excess off) Guys in Germany rarely ship overseas. www.ebay.com/itm/350518609865?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
