O.K, I know, I sometimes ask real strange questions. My newest one is as for period English underware, did the soldiers wear a sleeveless cotton undershirt under their greyback? Also what is a good period type of drawers to get. Thanks!

Scott.... forgive the delay.
The advertisement you've posted is for the USA, and its for civillian usage, not military. British military underwaer was of two types... 1) The singlet = Longjohn's. 2) The undershirt and under trousers = Longjohn's top and bottoms.
I'll search my records and post a couple of relevant pics once I've sorted them.

I know Larry, it's difficult to contain oneself. I was going to get a "undershirt" from a friend of mines site (http://www.trans-mississippi.com/index.html) to wear under my greyback, as I am more comfortable with an undershirt under wool. I figure it was "made by my mother for me". ;D Here is his catalog listing.
Scott

You know it's strange now that you bring it up. With all the WWI vendors over the years hardly anyone has offered period underwear. AEF Supply made US boxer shorts for a while, but they were made out of ultra-thin material. I have several sets of original US drawers, boxers and under shirts, and they are all much thicker material than what AEF offered. I've heard that Schipper made some German drawers for a while but, again, they were uber thin and poorly received so they stopped making them. I've never even seen repro Brit underwear offered.
The guy from Grande Impressions (I think that was the name), Matt Williams (I think that's his name!) made me a pair of French drawers back when I was going Poilu, but those were special order. You'd think that like ACW and WWII, some WWI vendor would offer period underwear!! I wonder why they don't??

Doesn't make sense to me either. I am one of the "sickos" who dress period all the way down to my skivies. All well. Scott

The scarey thing is I found a cotton shirt exactly like the 81 style at WALMART! All I did was replace the plastic buttons with white glass ones.

I think that one of the main reasons why there are vertually near none existant modern reproductions of the British WW1 Army Underwear, is that you'll still find the same patterns being made and used today.
Longsleaved Singlets : Longjohns... still sold openly, as are the vest and trouser examples. When I joined the RM's and was being given my initial issue of uniform, I was given two pair of long sleaved vest tops, and same for the longjohn bottoms. I think out of my whole career I only wore those itchy things once, and that was on my recruit survival exercise!

If I remember correctly, the book (yeah book, sorry analog man in a digital world) "Eye Deep in Hell" had multiple period photos of a Brit Soldiers kit and uniform issue.
I wore underwear for a while, but I eventually gave up on it unless it is cold. Then I just use the european surplus stuff from various countries that hasn't changed much in a century, ie; button front, adjustable tie in back. But then again if someone is checking out your underwear that closely just whip out your willie and wiggle it at them!

Thanks for the Nick Sekela lead- didn't know he was making those. I've been looking for that for awhile. :-)
Also, awhile back Sportsman's Guide was selling Swiss Army surplus long underwear for pretty cheap (maybe $14 for a bag of 6). They come in a variety of styles but they do fill the bill and can even be modified further for a proper period look.
