I just found this film on YouTube and it a very excellent WWI French film. What makes this film so great is the accuracy to this film adaptation of a French anti-war novel of the same name. Plenty of great shots of the Poilus and their weapons. One final interesting point is that all the key actors were veterans of La Grande Guerre. Hope you guys enjoy. WOODEN CROSSES is also available on Netflix. An excellent movie, the French answer to USA's ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, Germany's WESTFRONT 1918, and Britain's TELL ENGLAND. Scenes from WOODEN CROSSES were later used in Hollywood's ROAD TO GLORY.

PATHS OF GLORY is the ultimate English language film on WWI French which is lossely based on the 1917 Mutinies .... My favorite character is General Moreau played by George McReady ... 'If those little Sweethearts won't face German bullets, then they'll face French ones!' Patrick

Heavily 'cleaned up' and ... used in Hollywood's ROAD TO GLORY The original film clips were (IIRC) deemed too gory for Hollywood audiences and had to be toned down for use in RtG. Tom

Thank you for the heads up on this film Patrick. Its now residing on my new flashdrive, along with PASSCHENDAELE.
there are great similarities to some of the sceanes with: All Quiet on the Western Front, Paths of Glory, What Price Glory.
Not seen : Westfront, or Road to Glory, so I guess they are next on the list to aquire.
Thanks once again for the heads up.... I'll be watching the full film this evening... reclining on the couch, feet up, and slowly consuming a couple of cans of the amber nector and a plate of Ham-Cheese-n-Pickle sandwiches!

There are a few British films from the 1930s which seem to be impossible to find. TELL ENGLAND is about the Gallipoli campaign, SUSPENSE is a Western Front drama about a British unit whose position is being mined by the Germans, and a comedy, EAST LYNN ON THE WESTERN FRONT, about soldiers putting on a play in a derelict French theater. Get to work, Seph.

I think I've mentioned this before, but if you want to own Wooden Crosses (les Croix du Bois) it is available from Amazon, Borders, etc. on DVD. It's in a 2 movie set along with Les Miserables, also from the 1930's from the same director. I actually just got it for Christmas and rewatched it - awesome!
And I can't recommend highly enough Stosstrupp 1917. THE BEST WWI MOVIE EVER!! No women, no plot, just lots of great WWI trench action and a very moving ending. I just saw Larry's post about the new full version coming out. Can't wait to upgrade!
