I want to give you all a good heads-up on single loading French bolt-action weapons. 1. DO NOT ever chamber a cartridge and close the bolt on it. This puts pressure on the extractor and will either bend or break it. This has been happening alot here lately from the emails I have been getting from people who have been breaking the extractors doing this. Back in the past I would have told therm to buy a new extractor but now finding this part is impossible as they have been bought by collectors such as myself for in-case situations. These parts are in some cases are over 100+ years old and are getting brittle with age. So I recommend that you DO NOT do the above because if you break it chances are you will not get a replacement one. 2. If you are using a Fusil d'Infanterie Modèle 1886 "Lebel" place the cartridge in the cartridge carrier and then close the bolt, what this will do is allow the rim of the cartridge to properly catch the extractor underneath it and be placed against the bolt head face when chambered thus not putting pressure on the extractor. 3. If you are using a Berthier (all models) place the cartridge either in the correct enbloc charger (3 or 5) or the top of the cartridge feed lifter and then close the bolt as the sitaution above it will not place strain on the part.
