Today In History- September 15 Battle of Somme sees use of tanks for 1st time. 15 Sept 1916 | Somme, France As the British advanced in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, the 1st tank appeared in battle on September 15, 1916. The development of the tank began as early as 1911 in Austria, creating the need for motor artillery in warfare. The 1st tank was a British Mark I deployed during the Battle of Flers-Courcellette, an important engagement in the Battle of the Somme. The tank and corresponding units were able to breach two British lines, though was damaged from friendly fire. The British heavily employed tanks throughout the remained of the war, with the Germans not utilizing the machines as part of their field artillery. It changed the style of warfare for years to follow. www.footnote.com/page/2759_today_in_history_september_15/
