Hello all, Barbed Wire was such an integral part of WWI. Looking at GWHS photos I see that real barbed wire is used, which is good. But i can see certain problems when doing a public display. So may I offfer this link. www.darksidedisplays.comThey are a holloween store in Arizona and under the "decorations and props" section, choose the chain-wire-fence props and half way down the page you will find fake barbed wire. I use it for WWII public displays and it is light and looks pretty good, especially the rusted type. I'm not sure if this is helpful to anyone, but I thought I would share it in any case. Thanks Mike Harlow

Thanks for posting the site Mike.
In my opinion, if anyone feels that they have to touch something that looks sharp and nasty (they will no matter what is put up - fake or real), then they should expect to get hurt! But, as we all know, there are those who will do just that in order to make some easy cash.
That 20ft fake barbed wire for $6.00 is worth knowing about, especially for adding that extra notch of realism to venues like Fort MacArthur, and school lectures / displays.. if we ever get to do that sort thing.

Ahoy! I agree fake barbed wire is a great item to make a site look more authentic, and safe. Let's face it when John and Jane Q. Pulblik come to a event with Junior in tow, what is the first thing a child will do when seeing something new? Touch it. Myself ever being the cheapskate, chose to make my own Faux Barbed wire. i17.photobucket.com/albums/b52/crcasada/WWI/IMG_0269.jpgIt is made up of jute cord, and the plastic lacing stuff used to make beaded jewelry. Just weave the plastic lacing into the cord, spray paint your desired color, and set up! I have made about 200 feet of the stuff for a total cost of about $6.00- plastic lacing and paint. I too have made my own fake barbed wire in the past using electrical wire. Two strands are twisted to make the center and smaller pieces are simply twisted around them a couple of times to make the barbs. Then you just paint it all grey. It is really quite easy. Ausgezeichnet!

Fake barbed wire may be made, for those who have the time and inclination, or purchased, for those who have the spare dough. For fake barbed wire available for sale, you have the choice of cheesy but cheap to very realistic and expensive. Halloween stores generally supply the former in abundance, but here in tinseltown there are sources for the expensive stuff at the various prop houses (some of which are online)
We already have used a variety of homemade and purchased fake barbed wire in our public events. When I had a place to store pigtails, I would bring them out and dress them with the assortment of fbw which the public, discovering it was fake, generally found more fascinating than our historical displays.

The fake wire is certainly a lot easier to pack and store. :-)

Very interesting... lets just make up several designs of FBW, set them out in various patterns, then watch the rrecruits pour in! Hey, we could even have FBW sessions in no-mans-land!! ;D........ which incidentally, would be a deffinate sign that the participants had possatively LOST IT!! Seph

Yes I agree with Seph.
I only provided the link as an option to those who might want it for living history. I never meant for it to be used at the trench battle sites. besides, the fake wire might actually in some way be detrimental to the wire cutters, making the blades dull.

Ahoy!
FBW and the real stuff both have it's respective place in Living History. FBW for public events where safety is paramount, and in the given situation in a closed participant only event the real stuff is appropriate.
As Adam pointed out however the FBW is alot easier to put up and take down.

OK... Barbedwire at public.. safety panic.. events! One question that seems to crop up quite often on both sides of the 'Big Pong' is: " What would it have been like to attack through the thick stretches of barbedwire protecting the trenches?" The only way to answer that one, is with prior anticipation. A stretch of real barbedwire already having been erected, the questioner is escorted to the barrier... then, having been suitably armed ( ammo pouches, rifle, helmet).. is then pointed in the direction of the barrier and informed... " second hand interpritation or assumption, is no substitute for first hand experiance", then set the individual off on the task of answering their own question! Seph
