Hello Gentlemen... and Huns! ;D
As we strive to perfect our impressions, has anyone ever thought about the songs which were sung by the troops of the Great War? Not just the ones that we all know, like 'Its a long way to tippersary', but the songs that made their way into everyday life in the trenches. Songs that came from the areas the chaps lived in back home, or songs that were popular in the music halls of the day.
What about the soldiers versions of the populars songs.. the Parodies?
My daughter (bless her) has sent me a songbook (printed in 1930) which she picked up at a Car-boot Sale (Swap-meet in Americanese). Its a community song book of the popular songs of the trenches (British). Each song has its accompanied words and written music score.
Here is a list of the songs... and Soldiers Parodies
Its a Long Way to Tipperary.
Take me back to Dear Old Blighty.
Hello!, Hello!, Who's your Lady Friend?
If you were the only girl in the World.
I do like to be Beside the Seaside.
Ship Ahoy!
Who were you with Last Night?
Mademoiselle from Armentieres.
Oh, it's a Lovely War.
Another Little Drink wouldn't do us any Harm.
I'm Twenty One To-day.
When there isn't a Girl about.
Hush! Here comes the Dream Man.
Keep the Home Fires Burning.
God send you Back to Me.
When you wore a Tulip.
There's a Long Long Trail.
The Trail that leads to Home.
On the other side of the Big Black Cloud.
Pack up your Troubles in your Old Kit Bag.
Good-Bye-ee!
Here We Are! Here We Are! Here We Are Again!
Sister Susie's Sewing Shirts for Soldiers.
The Army of To-day's all Right
Never Mind.
A Broken Doll.
He's a Cousin of Mine.
I want to go Home.
And When I Die.
Way Down Yonder in the Cornfields.
A Rotten Song.
Left, Left.
If you were the only Boshe in the Trench.
Rolling Home.
The Last long Mile.
Are We Downhearted?
As you have done Before.
thingy Robin.
For You but Not For Me.
Fred Karno's Army.
Hush! Here comes a Whizz-Bang!
If you want to find!
I have No Pain.
I'll be there.
Far from Ypres I long to Be.
No More Soldiering.
Old Soldiers Never Die.
We Haven't Seen The Kaiser!
We've Had No Beer.
What did You Join The Army For?
Some of the above, especially the Parodies, I can clearly remember my Granddad singing to himself as he was working in his garden. Here are the words to one of my favourites from those days...
Old Soldiers Never Die!
Old soldiers never die,
Never die,
Never die;
Old soldiers never die,
Young ones wish they would.
This rain will never stop,
Never stop,
Never stop;
This rain will never stop,
No, oh! no, no, no.
Old soldiers never die,
Never die,
Never die;
Old soldiers never die,
They simply fade away.
