From pictures I have seen it looks like numbers were painted on the cover rather than red cloth sewn on. Comparing several pictures the numbers were also different some being more stylized.
Anyone have additional observations or comments?

IIRC, at the start of the war, the regimental numbers were in red- either painted or sewn on. I've seen both. Sometime in early 1915, an order was issued to use green for the numbers and eventually the practice was ordered discontinued in late 1915. Since our scenarios are set in 1918, they wouldn't be correct.

The numbers were both sewn and sometimes painted. Red early, green later.
