Ahoy!
Was wondering if any of the knowledgeable chaps out there had any idea of what it takes to convert a Turkish Mauser to a Gew 98?
I know the rear sight requires replacement, but is there anything else? And if so has anyone done this and could pass along any tips or advice?
Thanks in advance.

At minimum, you would have to modify the handguard, the barrel bands, nose cap/bayonet lug and the sling swivels, and it still wouldn't look quite right. A Czech 98/22 is a better candidate for conversion (rear sight and handguard), but you're probably better off just looking for a Gew 98 (or take the easy route--get a Steyr M95 and go Austro-Hungarian ). -Larry

Ahoy Larry! Thanks for the info and perhaps time and trouble not spent on this project. Chuck No problem. I find that Turk Mausers have certain charm all their own, and that in general it's best to leave old military rifles in their original configuration. Cheers, Larry PS-Speaking of conversions, check this one: www.turkmauser.com/Enfield/Now that's making a silk purse out of a sow's ear ;D

Ahoy! Here is the No. 1 Mk III that I mentioned. i17.photobucket.com/albums/b52/crcasada/IMG_0938.jpgSorry for the bad lighting, the sun just came out as I took the pic. I obtained this rifle from a chap who lives on the next road over from me. He needed some work done around his place and so I being the good Scout told him I would come over and assist. When all was said and done, he asked me "Don't you like old guns and stuff?" I said sure why? He returned with this rifle and bayonet. He asked if I knew what it was and told him yes it was a No. 1 Mark III British rifle. After looking it over I knew it would need a good cleaning. As I handed it back to him, he stopped me and said "Keep it, take care of it, and thanks for helping me." Needless to say I was utterly dumbfounded! So I cleaned it up, bought a sling and oiler for it. Took her to the range and she shoots great! Dead on at 100 yards with British Ball ammo. Chuck
