It was nice while it lasted...unfortunately it was a bit too accessible to the public.

Tony,
re: being closer or farther than Ozena - rather depends on where you are coming from so for me - about 90 miles to Ozena - maybe 100 - 110 miles to JRT (depends on if the following is correct - and how far off the 60 fwy the site was)
Never participated at a JRT event - but I belive it was a bit west south west of Beaumont - out east of Riverside.
(at least there is a road called Jack Rabit Trail off the 60/Pomona Freeway - about 3 to 3 1/2 miles west of Beaumont.

That's the place. YOu would actually get off at Gilman Springs Rd and hit JRT road from there. For me it was only a 45-60 min drive depending on if I took the freeways or sidestreets. That was nice. Ozena is about 3.5 hour drive for me.

Well, there was paintball, vandalism, rave parties and dirt bike riders racing around at all hours, just to name a few issues.
Basically, the site was too accessible to just anyone and the site-owner did little to control access. Of all the above, probably the vandalism was the greatest reason for the decision to leave JRT.
