Gentlemen;
Craig Harmon of the Lincoln Highway National Museum called me today looking for WWI reenactors to be part of his unit during the parade.
Background:
In 1919, the US Army sent 279 and 61 vehicles on a cross-country convoy that began in Washington DC ,took them through 17 states, and ended in San Francisco.
Request:
Craig is looking to recreate part or even all of this convoy next summer or fall, but is in need of vehicles. His goal is to arrive in San Francisco in time for Fleet Week, 2009.
As for the 2009 Presidential Inaguration Parade, he would like 34 troops to carry the flags of the 17 states travelled through (Wash, DC; MD; DE; NJ; NY; PA; WV; OH; IN; IL; IA; NE; WY; CO; UT; CA; and NV. He is also looking for ANY WWI vehicles for the parade. He would like two motorcycles, in particular.
The uniform would be: 1912 or 1917 Tunic and Breeches, Campaign Hat or OS cap, and Puttees or M1910/1917 leggings. No weapons or packs. Officers can wear Sam Browne belts. The original soldiers were Engineers, Medical, and Transportation corps, but infantry hat cords would suffice. Participants would be expected to be groomed to military standards.
I think this is a once in a lifetime oppurtunity for anyone, regardless of who you voted for. (This museum endorsed niether candidate and remains non-partisan) This is probably the only time Craig will request a WWI rather than Civil War presence.
Travel and lodging in the responsibility of the individual. If you are interested, you may contact Craig at the Lincoln Highway National Museum at: 202-536-5329. I plan to attend an am willing to split hotel/rental vehicle fees.
As for the SF event, it's not certain yet, but it's in the works. I will post more information as it becomes available. A quick note for the Cav guys: A troop of mounted CA Cav greeted the convoy in SF and led them through town.
You may pass this invitation along to anyone who would be interested.
Cheers!
