For you Punitive Expedition folks out there, What Price Glory is going to be offering the 1911 Sweater. Here's the prototype: Although these were on the way out by the time the Doughboys were hitting France, they still had some use. Now we'll really be dressing in style for Columbus!

Very cool! I'm surprised it's taken this long for someone to repro these - especially since originals are non-existant! This will set a new high in fashion in Columbus next year.
Does he have an ETA for these? Any idea of price?

The last one I saw went for $1600 on ebay and it wasn't in the best condition.
The ETA on this is "soon". As for the price I'm not sure of but I've been told that it won't be bad. I'll try and find out more.

I'd be keenly interested in one of these! The only ones I have ever seen are the ones in Machado's book, and this photograph of one in a 1912 Pasquale catalog: The catalog image (boy would I like to buy one for $6.00!) shows something that is not readily apparent in the Machado book images; the M1911 Service Sweater buttons all the way up to the neck onto a knitted collar band. You can see this best on the Lieutenant standing on the top left of the photo on page 36 of the Machado book. The WPG prototype seems to have a V shaped neckline which tapers into the front plaquet, with the top button buttoning around the collar bone rather the than the neck. I wrote Jerry a letter showing him this, and also mentioning that the buttons in the photos all look darker than the sweater itself. I hope these are simple to fix, because the sweater would be great!

Here's a couple of more pictures: I got these off various ebay auctions but they seem consistent with (the sweater in question ultimately sold for $1600) the private purchase picture- basically buttons straight up. However, the collar seems to be not as high. We'll see what the finished product is like soon I hope.

Hi Adam-
Those photos are great! I sent the catalog image to Jerry and he said:
"Thanks for your comments, and I really appreciate the photo. We'll try to improve them on the next run."
I look forward to what he comes up with.
Cheers!

This is the new repro from the WPG site: This link will bring you to a much larger version of the image: onlinemilitaria.net/old/pic/US_M1911_Sweater.jpgIt's tantalizingly close. I like the overall proportions. Jerry fixed how the neck and placket join. I wish the placket was an inch longer. If you compare the repro with the original images up thread, you will see differences in the pocket and bottom hem. On the originals, the pockets are hemmed on the top edge, and stitched to the sweater body by turning about a half inch of seam allowance to the inside. That gives them the characteristic puffy look that you don't see on the repro. On the repro, the top edge of the pocket is a gathered, finished edge, and it looks like the pocket is stitched flat to the sweater body. The repro also looks more widely ribbed than the original. On the repro I count 18 ribs between the pockets. On the original I count 37 ribs! Another difference is on the bottom hem. The repro has a gathered hem, like a WW2 five button sweater. The hem on the original is folded over on itself about two inches and stitched. It is not gathered. Again, this gives a characteristic loose look that the sweater should have. This sweater fills a large gap for the pre-WW1 US Army. I look forward to seeing future improvements!

My fear is that if these don't sell, he may not make more with future improvements. We have seen "one time runs" before. I want one, but not until things get better financially. I just hope they are still around.

Just noticed that Schipperfabrik is now listing a US Wool Sweater under "comming soon"
Gotta wonder.

Don't hold your breath... I also noticed that the eagle snap cartridge belt that was listed on the "coming soon" list for almost two years has been dropped. I bet Jerry Lee will ultimately repro those.
