3 Officers wounded.
Captain Roffey, Lts Rowley and Helps.
86 Other Ranks.
Missing.
6 Officers.
402 Other Ranks.
All this came just 3 days after the Btn has disembarked on French soil at Boulogne, and had moved into position on the 24th August following a very tiring rail journey and a 12 mile forced march with full equipment.
On the 25th August they were dug in at Viesly in a rainstorm of tropical severity, they then marched 5 miles back to a place close to Ligny. They did not reach their final battle positions on high ground at Longsart Farm until 0345 hrs on the 26th August, and in pitch darkness this exhausted Btn began to dig slit trenches.
At first light they were attacked by heavy German forces, the Btn had no Artillery Support and only 2 Machine Guns, one of which packed up almost immediately.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Men with the hearts of lions.
Their names liveth on forever!
