After finally purchasing a Gewehr which meets standards, I've found that all components are up to code- except that the safety is extremely difficult to maneuver. While the component is able to switch between full safety (far right) and half safety (vertical) with ease, once the safety is off, it's almost impossible to turn it back on.
Has anyone experienced this problem before, and if so, can you advise me on a course of action?

Not unusual. It may be a simple as built-up crud in the bolt shroud. Tear-down the bolt completely, soak the parts in mineral spirits (paint thinner) to strip away all the old oil and grease (which can harden over time) and give everything a good scrub. Lubricate with CLP/Breakfree, Ballistol or Hoppe's gun oil and reassemble. If that doesn't do the trick, go the the Military Mauser forum on Gunboards and do a search for more suggestions.

I ended up taking it to a gunsmith for repairs; I'm no expert on the g-98 as of yet, and I wouldn't dare bring a possibly malfunctioning weapon to an event.
