The subject of blankets in the German Army often comes up and for me, at least, it's always been somewhat of a mystery. From what I've read, there was no "issue" blanket meant for field use- the German soldier was expected to make do with his great coat. Like all theories, that's great but as we all know, it can get cold and it appears that soldiers brought blankets into the field, with or without persmission of their officers. It also appears that a variety of blanket "models" were used and no doubt this probably because more apparent by 1918. Here's some pictures: Two examples of blankets. Blanket in use in a bunker- check out the soldier in the top bunk. I'm sure that there's a lot more to this but for our purposes, there appears to be some flexibility as far as what can be used.

Ostfront used to sell nice unmarked and undated reproduction blankets that would be suitable for WWI. Maybe if there is enough interest, they will be re-stocked. On the same theme, Landser's sells reproduction bedding. It is unmarked and undated, and also appears to be suitable for WWI.

Some have argued that the modern Italian Army surplus blankets would also be acceptable. But I could be mistaken there...
