If you're looking for a history on just HOW trench warfare developed on the Western Front, Trench by Stephen Bull is a pretty comprehensive introduction. Although it's out of print, it can be found on ebay for a decent price. The downside is that most of the focus in on sectors occupied by the British but there's also some stuff on the French and British. A lot of the pictures are very detailed and bear study for improving one's impression.
