Thanks! They're an amazing piece of history. I'm working on getting its predecessor, the M1909 in .45 Long Colt. :-)

Wish I had known there were two at last weekends gunshow and a near mint 38-40.

I hate to revive an old thread, but I'd rather not start another one. Were these used by US Army and Marines in Europe?
I just acquired one and would like to know if it's worth holstering.
Thanks

Yes; there weren't enough 1911's to meet demand, so large numbers of M1917 revolvers were issued as well, both to the Army and the Marines. Just as an aside, revolvers are great for reenacting, as they don't need to be blank-adapted.

BUT you will need the half-moon clips and those can be a real pain to find and then load. Be warned!
Essentially, these were Colt 1909 New Army Revolvers re-configured for the .45 ACP round (hence the half-moon clips to hold the rounds since the .45 ACP round has no rim like the .45 Long Colt round).
As far as use goes, they were issued to officers, NCOs, and machine gunners and were used by all ranks on an ad hoc basis for trench raiding.

Hey Adam,
I dream of half-moon clips--try rod-ejecting/gate-loading an 8-round Rast-Gasser some time!

Check ebay I have seen lots of 1/2 and full moon clips. I picked up about 20 late last year. I will look up the name but I got a great moon and demoon tool on ebay. Takes all the work out of it.

Reading period manuals help as well, they were written for the weapons and knew how to use them properly Patrick
