i've seen lots of enfields wire wrapped for a cup launcher for WWII, even WWI dated ones but no evidence of their use in the great war............did they use them?

The wire wrapped Enfield SMLE is basically a Post WW1 expediant. They were used towards the later stages of the war, due obviously to operational accidents. The wire wrapping was in place to minimise the cause of shrapnel from the rifle furnature and barrel should there be an explosion. An explosion would take place on the sudden build up of gas preasure caused when the firing the grenade. The preasure build up would find the soft spot of a weak barrel... resulting in the subsequent banana effect on the barrel.
