Guys; I have been looking at allot of photos recently and have noticed that the Gew.88 keeps popping up in reserve and landsturm right into 1918. Some of the photos are studio jobs, but many seem to be in the field. As I am almost 40, and looking to do a Württemberg reserve or Landsturm impression (my family is from there and they seem to have many Gew.88s in photos) would it be alright to use a Gew.88? Is there any rule that you can't use a Gew.88 or 88/05? Thanks; Christian

As a general statement yes but you would have to research the specific unit in question to be sure. Most likely, photographic evidence would be the easiest unless you have access to someone's memoirs.

In any case, it should be a Gew.88/05 (or the much rarer 88/14), as all were standardized to take the same charger (stripper clip) as the Gew. 98. The Austro-Hungarians did use packet-loading (i.e. unconverted) Gew. 88s, designated "Repetiergewehr M13." A large number of Gew. 88/05s were sent to Turkey.

I'd go with Adam's statement. Pick a unit and do what you can to find evidence of them being used. If not...I would say that if you can find plenty of good photo evidence of those types of units using the 88, then I say why not.
Its the instances of people finding one or two photos of something and saying..."oh look...they did use them...I saw it a picture once", is where you get problems. Always go with the normal vice the exception. In this case you probably have found good evidence to support your impression. Document, document, document!

As a general statement, I would recommend that anyone serious about doing WWI German to invest in a GEW 98 to start with. You'll have greater flexibility for impressions rather than trying to build the impression around the weapon. Not to say it can't be done but it makes things a lot more difficult plus it will be easier to fall in other Germans if you don't belong to a specific unit.
