PBS series "Downton Abbey" second season starts this Sunday (Jan. 8). The first season ended with the arrival of a telegram announcing the outbreak of war with Germany, so this season will be dealing with the years 1914-18, definitely worth watching.
Masterpiece Classic will also be doing an adaptation of Sebastian Faulk's novel, "Birdsong," which is set in France during the First World War. "Birdsong" premiers this spring.

Probably one of the most interesting aspects is that it really shows the class system and how the war weakened it. You definitely see some class barriers collapsing. Granted, things are probably a bit more dramatic than in reality but it still gives a very good feeling of the period from the civilian side.
The thing to remember is that everyone was a civilian first and for most of the war's participants, that's what they returned to after the war (for the ones who survived).
