I've rebuilt probably 30 canteens in my days and it really depends on what you have. Repro covers and clips are easy to get. Leather harnesses are also doable. The real hard part are the corks. Historic Reproductions no longer makes repros so you must rebuild the cork using the original hardware. If you are interested in doing this...shoot me an email at wkoliwer@yahoo.com I can rebuild the cork or do a full restoration. Cheers Dan

Would it be possible to have the metal fitting reproduced at a realistic cost? Something to consider if it hasn't been already.

One would think there is a repro of almost everything else but,not these or,messkits.

FYI - Hessen Antique had a prototype Messkit a the GWA fall event - looked good. The top and body were made from multiple aluminum panels welded together and looked a little crude from the inside, but everything was ground smooth from the outside and it looked good to me (just needed paint). I did not have a spork to snap into its place in the body, so I don't know about how it compares size-wise. I asked price-point, and Rick said maybe $40-$50.

Why weld one together I wonder? If a factory can stamp out helmets makes no sense to take this route tome. Of course maybe that's just because it is a prototype.
