Can anyone tell me if the KuK tent stakes/Poles are identical to the German or are they different?

Can anyone tell me if the KuK tent stakes/Poles are identical to the German or are they different? There are very subtle differences. Primarily, the differences are noted on the wooden tent pegs. On the K.u.K. wooden tent pegs, the metal sleeve on the end of the peg you hammer is shorter than the corresponding part on the German pegs. I remember seeing photos illustrating this, in a fair amount of detail, in either one of Jurgen Kraus' books or one of Johan Somers' books. I'm not sure if the wooden tent pole sections, or the metal tent pegs, have any significant differences----I don't recall seeing any photos of K.u.K. examples of these.

There are several versions of KuK tent pegs--in addition to the ones so admirably described above, "sardine" style pegs were also issued, very similar to the French style, only with a metal band reinforcing the top (some also had metal tips as well). Two Austro-Hungarian shelter-halves are designed to form a pyramid-shaped shelter using a rifle with a fixed bayonet (in the scabbard) as the only tent pole, so soldiers who were issued rifles were not issued tent poles. One presumes that troop using Stutzens and Karabiners (which are a full 10" shorter than the standard rifle) were issued some sort of tent pole sections, but I haven't found any details on them. AFAIK, the KuK Heer did not issue the German style all-metal pegs, as they would not really be compatible with KuK style zeltbahns.

The few reference books currently available on Imperial German and Austro-Hungarian uniforms and equipment are good, but they are still lacking in a lot of areas. They are great for details and photos of commonly issued gear, but really fall short on covering all of the variations and production modifications that were encountered. Often, when I go to these books, I can't find what I'm looking for!----this is particularly true for K.u.K. stuff!

Thank you folks for the information. Very interesting that they use the rifle as the pole. Is there a vendor for the pegs that you folks are aware of? If not what do you folks use when re-enacting?

Schipper sells the French-style pegs. I found some on eBay, but I haven't managed to put the reinforcing bands around the top yet.
It's always a bit of a jigsaw puzzle with K.u.K. stuff, but that's half the fun.
