Can't remember where I heard this but, maybe someone here will know for sure. Where M16 helmets painted with red primer under the field grey? I believe that red primer was used on equipment, particularly the steel enameled mess kits. Below is a link describing WWII helmet production. In the article, it states that the stages of manufacture were similar to those used in WWI. There is no mention of priming the helmets. Also, below are links with German newsreels showing M40 production. It doesn't show whether or not the helmets were primed. Jacob Caputo and Ken Niewiarowicz will know for sure. www.german-helmets.com/Factory%20Main.htmwww.youtube.com/watch?v=dqyaOvXvSnE&feature=relatedwww.youtube.com/watch?v=9YOCZaYGLpo
