Yes it is TRUE ... What is funny is that I just got done talking on the phone to the person who did the make a-like conversions, he is a friend of mine. Patrick

What's up with the magazine? Looks like a post-war Greek conversion to 7.9x57mm. Where's the infamous CSRG mag? -Larry

What they did was made it look like the 30-06 version, the ones my friend did are regular CSRG's. Patrick

The M1918 Chauchat in .30-06 was soon recognized as abysmal, the common problem was a failure to extract after the gun had fired only a few rounds and became slightly hot. Based on archival records, the adaptation of the Chauchat to use .30-06 ammunition had been compromised by incorrect chamber measurements and sub-standard manufacturing. The preserved archival records show that US inspectors at the Gladiator factory rejected about 40% of the 30-06 Chauchat production of the 18,000 made while the remaining 60% proved problematic whenever some small allocations reached the front lines. Another common problem was the Americans did not listen to thier French Instructors in regard to using this machine rifle. Basically the French tried to teach them the 'team' concept on the usage of it and how to correctly fire in in the prone and the walking positions and the Doughboys blew them off as what did they know, they thought of the weapon as a single man weapon not a team crewed weapon. I have read some of the reports by the French instructors when they trained the AEF, they did not have a very good opinion of them calling them arrogant and other things. The best accounts were of the Marines and the 92nd and 93rd Divisions. Patrick

Patrick may be able to assist, I'd have to locate the owner of the Marine's ChauChat and try and get some pictures in November when I'm at the event. :-)

Like you said, we didn't listen to our French instructors...until we had to. :-)
That would actually require people to...should I say it...actually TRAIN. Oops, I said the T-word. ;D
