I have my buttonstick in my hold-all, of course, but am curious what kind of polish was used?
I've used gallons of liquid brasso through my reenacting years. However, I can help think there another paste/solid issued/sold to British troops. I've heard of "rotten stone" in 19th century docs. but can't seem to find any specific WWI British references. Any info or sources for me to check out?
Thanks much!

I believe the wartime item was "Soldier's Friend" (the manufacturer had a sense of humour), a powder mixed with water to make a paste. Over the years many materials have been used to polish brass, including powdered pipeclay and tobacco ash, certainly "Brasso" and its major rival "Bluebell" were the big dogs in later years.
Any help?
