O.K all, As for the "grease tin" would one of the European tobacco tins work for this?

Well - now that he is back maybe Seph will put in some word on this - but...
Probably weapons related - most dubbin tins I've seen have been round - plus no reason for the army to come up with a web pouch to carry such.
On the other hand - the Musketry book makes no mention of using grease on the SMLE - only oil, wire mesh, and flannelette. But perhaps grease would be used to lubricate parts of a Vickers or some other firearm.

Not sure, I know some rifles had grease applied to the locking lugs as it lasts longer and resists moisture better than oil would.

OUTSTANDING! Thanks! I may put some graphite grease in it for my SMLE for a "little extra" lubrication for the old girl.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the 'grease' carried in 1903 pattern equipment was an 'all-purpose' affair derived from whale oil and was used on everything from weapons, to leatherwork to feet.

Keep in mind that when all is said and done the mineral jelly tin (aka grease tin) was a short lived piece of equipment issued for use with the Pattern 1903 bandoleer gear - there is no evidence that it was ever issued for use with the Pattern 1908 web gear. The "proper" lubricant container - as such - in use with the SMLE during WW1 is the brass oiler made to fit into the stock (along with the pull through).
