All; I was looking into getting a bayonet for my "new" Gew.98 and came accross something I had never seen before while doing research. The SG 84/98 bayonet. I always thought that the butcher blade was really the only "right" bayonet for WWI, and this really floored me. Here is my question: I do WWII german reenacting, I have a wood handle repro of the WWII german bayonet that looks exactly like the 1915 variation of the S84/98, would this also work for WWI reenacting? Thanks; Christian

Hi Christian, The S84/94 was developed before the war for use by Cavalry, Artillery and other formations that were issued the carbine (as a general rule, although you will see come photographic exceptions ie: 98a w/ butcher). Production ceased at the outbreak of hostilities and then started up again in 1917 (see the new Gew98 book for reference). Since you are going a WWI Infantry Impression you would never of been issued the smaller 84/98 bayonet so unfortunately you can't use one with your G98 and be correct, You must have a butcher. Best, Dan
