While watching the movie 'The Somme' (1926) I found out about James Richardson and his leading the way with his bagpipes to inspire the Canadians to capture Regina Trench during the battle of the Somme, and was awarded the VC posthumously. The movie had him actually striding back and forth on the parapet of the German trench, while the Wikipedia description has him pacing in front of the German wire. In any case, it's remarkable he wasn't killed there and then (instead of later in the day.) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Cleland_Richardson
