I've seen a few photos of camouflaged gas mask cans and mess kits. These all had a tortoise shell pattern, and were said to be original. Has anyone else seen these? What is the general opinion----original, post-war "trench art", or outright fake?

I've never seen a documented period picture of this in practice. Painted Camo was a HUGE side business right after the war for Doughboys looking for a cool looking souvenir (during the temp. occupation etc.) In fact, one of Walt Disney's first money making endeavors was buying surplus German helmets and painting them camo in in the 1920s. I believe LOTS of "original Camo" examples are in fact post war paint jobs from the 1919-1925 time period (which makes it impossible to tell if the paint job was wartime of not). In regards to camo on other pieces of field gear, this all falls into the same category as the helmets, post war. My 2 Pfg. Dan

Dan,
That's what I thought.
Thanks!
