That's a great site. I actually enjoy blanco'ing my gear and bulling my boots--that attitude is totally inaccurate for the period, I know. Didn't see much blanco'd gear at the March event this year. Admittedly, I didn't blanco my gear, either. I was hoping to see what color/type the other guys had applied. I'll probably go with a No.97 shade. On a related note, a lot of WWII reenactors refuse to blanco their gear. Not sure why--unblanco'd webbing at a 1944 Europe event just plain looks wrong.

All of my (WWII) kit is blancoed, and it drives me nuts to see plain kit.

O.K, What is the "recipe" for the Blanco substitute for the WW1 equipment made from a shoe paste?

I believe the simplest method involve mixing shoe whitener with either poster or watercolour (color, on your side of the pond) paint. The correect amounts will vary with the paint and state of the web - try it on some scrap first . (Make sure you can scrub most of it off afterwards, and DON't let it cale - it looks 'orrible!)
Any help?

Almost 95% of the British uniform and kit is different.

Remember that much of the kit lasted until 1937 (or later), so blancoed examples could date from the post-war spit-and-polish days Q
