While discussing bunker contruction this past weekend, the topic of bunks and bedding came up. Does anyone know if the WW2 Blue/White checked bed linen was used during the Great War?? If it wasn't, does anyone know what would have been used??

In the 1930 version of "All Quiet on the Western Front", the blue/white checkered bedding is used in the barracks. I believe that this is accurate, since actual WWI German veterans were used as technical advisers during filming (many of them acted as extras in the basic training and battle scenes).
At the front, I believe that no real bedding was issued. Instead, the soldiers were expected to use their greatcoats as "bedding". I've seen this in some period bunker photos. However, I've also seen some period bunker photos with bedding on the bunks-----probably gifts from home. Additionally, it was common for soldiers to gather hay to make mattresses and use as improvised blankets (this is mentioned a few times in "All Quiet on the Western Front", and is also depicted in "Stosstrupp 1917"). In general, while in the field, the Germans were expected to "live off the land".
