Hey guys,
I'm new to German WWI and need to start acquiring gear and uniforms. Does anyone have a gear and uniform list that I can use to start putting together my impression?
Thanks,
Thor

Dan Sutton (hwolf on the forum) is the IR23 authenticity officer and Im sure he'll point you to the best sources with a list. You might want to send him a PM or e-mail. Some basics that come to mind:
Uniform (1) Tunic - early, mid or late war w IR 23 shoulder boards (2) Trousers - stone gray or feldgrau (3) M16 Helmet w/ liner and chinstrap (3) Issue shirt (4) suspenders (5) jack boots (lw/ learther soles & hobnails - no rubber soles) (6) Wool socks - several pairs (7) Feldmutze - Infantry trimmed (field cap)
Gear (1) M1898 G 98 Mauser (2) Issue belt w/ Prussian buckle (3) 2 ammo pouches (4) E-tool w/ belt carrier (5) "Butcher Blade" bayonet (6) Breadbag (7) Gas mask with cannister
Misc (1) Stripper clips - Lots! (2) 8mm blanks (3) pocket knife (4) Mess kit + spork
I'm sure there's more but this is a good starter. Maybe other's will add to the list. Marcus, once the list is complete this would make a great "sticky" topic.

Here is the list for new recruits that the Oklahoma JR23 put out years ago. It is followed up by detailed descriptions and lots of other helpful information.
Minimum Kit: Field Cap Tunic Trousers Trouser Suspenders Issue Shirt Boots or Field Shoes with Wrap Leggings Rifle Helmet Equipment Belt Buckle Ammo Pouches Bread Bag Field Flask Mess Kit Spade Spade Carrier Gas Mask Gas Mask Can with Carrier Straps Bayonet and Scabbard Bayonet Frog
Complete Kit (items issued to all German soldiers so should be included for proper impression): Greatcoat Knit Gloves Backpack Tent Poles, Pegs and Bag Dog Tag with Cord Soldbuch Tent Section Spork Extra Gas Mask Filter w/Canvas Carrier Trodle (bayonet knot) Neck Stock
Other Items Commonly Carried: Esbit Stove Photos of family Period Currency (small amounts) Period Wallet Lard Container Clothing Brush Sewing Kit Pipe & Tobacco, Cigars, Chewing Tobacco, or Filterless Cigarettes Watch (pocket watch was most common)
If anyone is interested PM me your address and I'll make a copy of the book for you. It was one of the first reference sources I got when I started WWI and I have found it invaluable. It goes into great detail but is in a concise format, so it's very handy.
