All-
With the GWHS attending an increasing amount of public events such as Ft. MacArthur, Marching Through History, and the recent aviation event at Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, we are increasingly becoming more visible to the public, both general and reenacting.
If you are attending one of these events, it is essential that your uniform, equipment and weapons comply with both the GWHS and unit authenticity standards. For the most part, this has not been a problem but in a few instances we've had a few issues and especially in the case of invididuals who are new to the GWHS.
It is the responsibility of the unit commanders to ensure that their people are properly uniformed and equipped. Additionally, unless a scenario calls for it (i.e. a battle event at Ozena or similar), individuals' uniforms and equipment should be clean, neat, and in good repair (or reasonably so). The "just came out of the field" excuse does not cut it- if you are out of the line, you would have been expected to maintain military standards for dress, grooming and deportment. I'm not expecting parade ground spit and polish (unless the scenario calls for it) but I do expect people to look and act like soldiers.
Finally, and this one of my pet peeves, while wearing original uniforms are an option for some, I strongly recommend that discretion be used. Many of the ones I've seen worn look exactly like what they are: 90-some year old garments and they simply do not read correct. We're portraying soldiers of the time and as such, uniforms would have been a few years old, at the most. There are plenty of good reproductions out there on the market- use them.
While this may seem like I'm stating the obvious, especially to you prior service people, it still needs to be stated and enforced. Also, bear in mind that when you do show up at an event, you are representing the GWHS, not just yourself.
Please note that anyone showing up at a GWHS event who, in the judgement of the unit leaders/and or GWHS Board, does not have an impression that is appropriate will be asked to make the necessary changes or, in the extreme case, be asked to leave.
If you have any questions in regard to your impressions, please consult with your unit leaders.
