Hey All,
Even back in the early days of WWI at JRT there were the same MG issues. Two of the most brilliant projects were hatched from this.
One was a lewis gun butt stock/barrel jacket/outer rcvr parts melded with an SKS. Sure it had only ten rounds a reload but it was cheap to run and .... it RAN! And kept running. And it looked great!
The other was a total homebuilt project also based on an SKS. The SKS was modified and welded to and built up to look like a French Chauchaut MG. Once again, it looked just as funky as an original but it WORKED better than an original.
Just some ideas of how someone with a bit of ingenuity and machining/fabricating skill can make something that is totally legal, dependable, and looks good.

Great ideas- we've considered this on numerous occassions. The problem is getting them made- nobody with the requisite skills out there (so far). Perhaps that will change in the future.  |

I know the Chauchat was sold to someone. Did it stay out west or did it go back east? Does anyone know?
The Lewis/SKS was up in Northern CA. Has anyone seen it... anywhere?

I sure hope it will change soon, you've got a young mechanical engineering student at your disposal... Welding and, come October, milling and machining training, riiiiiight here.  I hope I can be of help with this noble journey in the near future! |

In that case Aiden..... x1 .303inch Lewis LMG please! I'll supply the Magazines. Then, a .303inch Vickers HMG would nice! ;D |

It was sold to Brett Johnson of the 8ème Bataillon Chasseurs à Pied back east where it was copied. There were a total of 5 made of these. I know the person who made the copies and have been in contact with him to make me a copy of it so that we can have one to use in CA. Patrick |

I don't know about a .303 Vickers, but I have seen a blank firing Lewis Gun and heard of a blank firing Vickers, based on 9mm blank firing Sten guns (legally fully automatic starting pistols). in the case of the Lewis, it has cut down sten mags and 'suffers a lot of jams', the Vickers, I believe hides the full sized mags beneath the belt.
Not what you're used to, but we've got the nanny state.

What about Madsens? Anyone out there blank adapt one? There is a company in that makes semi versions, but I'm curious if they can blank adapted. I've heard it's not very easy, but I don't really know the weapon.

I've heard it's not very easy, but I don't really know the weapon. There's a company called "Midwest Metal Creations" that occasionally has semi-automatic Madsens in 7.9x57 or .30-06 for ~$2800. I don't think they have a website, but do a search on YouTube. Not sure what you would do about magazines (10 rd. limit for CA, I think Madsen mags are 30rds). I also believe there are a few de-milled Madsens that have had either SKS or M-1 carbine guts installed. That may be a moot point, as IMA is out of de-milled Madsens and I don't know of another source. -Larry |

I've been in contact with both Midwest Metal and a Madsen owner from the GWA. MWM will be making more. I believe he uses the 1946 versions though. Haven't done a side by side comparison of the two models yet. I'm going to see what the M1 Carbine version entails.

I have an old SKS I'd love to turn into a Chauchat! I'm in if the plans for those come out this way!

I have been in contact with the person who made the copies and when he gets a chance he will build me one for the unit (151 RIL) to use. He will work on it for me over the winter months and will try to get it to me by the March Event in 2011.
Marshall ... We must maintain to be riflemen first then worry about a MG, we do not have the numbers to field a Chauchat Crew at this time and I know myself and Kevin B have talked about this, he agreed ... till we get the numbers up in the unit we will remain riflemen first.
